Dear Ginny,
1. This is a good idea since it will help the movement of qi.
2. Where possible, this mirror should not face either apartment's door directly. Otherwise, it is acceptable to do so.
However, avoid joining pieces of mirror togehter. If the mirrors are joined it is best to place a strip of wood or lining between the splits as such split mirror lines are inauspicious.
